This should be a great time to attack the airline lobbies--already under superficial pressure to go away, their budgets are getting hit. Now, if only fuel prices were higher and permanent, the setting would be complete.

The Austin to Dallas train takes over 6 hours and costs about 60% of a SW Air ticket. Which would you rather do?

People and trains are a strange thing. It has something to do with not being able to control it yourself, I think. I live Britain, in south Wales, thanks to the days of coal we have an incredibly extensive rail network, which goes more places more directly than the roads. And yet we seem willing to let that network die off and complain that the roads aren't any good.
