I drive through a checkpoint weekly to visit my 92 year old mother. Yesterday, the officer asked if I lived in Terlingua and if it appeared safe and secure 'down there'. How could I tell him I feel harassed and intimidated, even threatened. Some border patrol officers, long guns cradled in their arms, silently walk among the tourists as they ready to board canoes for a river trip. Others surround you, 12 rifles silhouetted by the blinding lights, when you pull over to check that your bicycle is still on your the roof of your car. Others knock on your door after dark, their guns pointed at your doorknob. Some officers are helpful and friendly. Do we really deserve this much attention? The Deputy of the Marfa sector recently told us incidents were down in the area, so why bring in more guns. I fear the repeat of Ezequiel. I fear for the 80 year old local artisan who is shuttled back to Mexico. I wanted to tell the young, handsome patrolman that I felt safer before the border was shut.
